Review: Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter

Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles #1) by Gena Showalter

She won't rest until she's sent every walking corpse back to its grave.

Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that's all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real.

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn't careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies.
Review:

Everything about Alice in Zombieland drew me in; from its intriguing blurb, to the gorgeous cover, to it being loosely based upon Alice in Wonderland, a classic everyone loves. I wasn’t expecting a retelling, so much as a few similarities and whilst I feel that the premise is a bit misleading, I’m not too fussed because honestly, I was having too much fun to notice!

Ali led the story beautifully; strong, determined and brave, she had me cheering her on each step of the way; I can’t wait to meet up with her again. Cole is definite bad boy material. He’s dark, brooding, rough around the edges, but as the story moves along, you start to see a sweet, softer side of him start to show, especially when he’s with Ali. My favourite aspect was definitely the relationship between Cole and Ali. One minute they were bantering, the next they were disagreeing and the next they were kissing like there was no tomorrow – see what I mean? Fun times!

Ali’s new best friend, Kat, is funky, funny and full of energy. Not only she is an amazing friend to Ali but she brightens up the story with her energetic, bubbly, personality making the story even more enjoyable. Let it be known, that when Kat’s around, there is never a dull moment in sight.

Gena Showalter has revamped the old zombie tale and made it her own. This was my first zombie experience and I am happy to say, it didn’t disappoint! This is the start of a great series and with all the action that went down during Alice in Zombieland, this is only the tip of the iceberg; Ali’s story has only just begun.

  1. Beccccca! I'm so glad you loved this so much.
I have BIG problems with Cole, and their relationship, but... I just couldn't put the book down.

And I LOVED KAT. I swear she's the best part of the whole book ♥

  3. KAT! She was my FAVOURITE character in the whole book. That girl was just so FUN and hilarious and feisty and BOLD and I so, so, so love her. Ali was a FAB heroine too and while Cole took some time to warm to, I did grow to appreciate his relationship with Ali. I loved the unique spin Gena put on zombies. The entire journey was just so addictive! I am really glad you enjoyed this, Becca! Amazing review! <3

  4. I'm not a fan of zombies, like really at all! I'm also not a HUGE fan of Alice in Wonderland (although I ADORE retellings of Alice). But, the two of them together just sounds so amazing (I know that doesn't really make sense...)! Thanks for the review Rebecca. Can't wait to see what I think of this one. :)

  5. I enjoyed this one too and had a lot of fun with it, and I agree with you about Ali - she is truly a refreshing and admirable character, but I thought Showalter tried too hard to sound YA and ended up being like Ali's grandparents in places.
    Great review!

    1. Oh, I can definitely see your point about Gena coming through strong as Ali's grandparents...but weren't they so sweet? Glad you enjoyed this as well! :)
