Review: Spirit by Brigid Kemmerer

Spirit (Elemental #3) by Brigid Kemmerer

Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He has learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can't seem to afford any allies.

He's up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.

Then there's Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She's not hostile. She's bold. Funny. Hot. But she's got an agenda, too.

With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down - which means he'll have to find someone he can trust.

POWER. ENEMIES. EVERYWHERE.
I’m a fan of the Elemental series which means I’m always looking forward to next instalment, even if that means the book heavily surrounds a character I didn’t always like once upon a time. However, after reading the third book of the series, I can safely say that while I really enjoyed both Storm and Spark, Spirit is by far my favourite instalment so far which I hadn’t been expecting. I can safely say that I've learnt my lesson not to assume when Brigid Kemmerer is involved...

I didn’t like Hunter in Storm due to the fact he tried to come between Becca and Chris but I did start to warm to him in Spark. After Spirit, I no longer have any reservations about him and in fact, I actually really like him, which I wouldn't have thought possible two books ago. With Hunter trained so well and endless lessons of self-control under his belt, he’s taught himself to keep everything bottled up inside but you can see he’s hanging by a thread. After witnessing everything he’s dealing with and going through, you just want to give the poor guy a hug.

I was hoping the Elemental storyline was going to be more present in Spirit and it was definitely was but that’s not to say other aspects were ignored; in fact, quite the opposite. With this being Hunter’s book, we finally get to see him – not just how he is perceived or the walls he puts up, but the real Hunter Garrity. New characters are introduced; action levels spike an all-time high (holy batman); relationships are prodded, poked and put to the test (so where is this going? are you trying to kill me?).

Spirit is brazen - characters, romance and plot wise - and it pays off.

P.S – Being mentioned in the acknowledgements (no matter how cool that is) had no influence on my review or rating. I have to say though, I feel pretty honored being mentioned in such an awesome book (or any book for that matter)!

4.5/5

  1. That's really awesome that you got a mention in the book! My friend Kristin did too, for continually pushing Pink onto Brigid.

I'm still not completely sold on Hunter - he's no identical twin - but I did like him a lot more after this one and reading the ebook. I was REALLY impressed with the ending of this one too, it was a gutsy move and it's making me excited (and terrified) for the rest of the books - especially with Brigid tweeting about what she's doing to Michael.

    1. I saw that Kristin got a mention. So did Sarah! ^__^

What an ending, right? I'm also terrified about the whole Michael business and what she plans to do to him. After Spirit, I do not trust Brigid. At all.
