By now, you've probably heard of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. It's one of my favourites of 2015 and has become a beloved book by many. And if you haven't checked it out yet, I hope you do!

Hi, guys – Simon Spier here, and I’m pretty excited to dive into diversity on this freaking amazing blog. Sit back and relax while I tell you all about my Most Holy Awesome Pride Month Agenda. It's pretty epic if I do say so myself. Oh, wait, I just did.

So, here in the US, June is a pretty big deal for the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s National Pride Month, which means it’s an entire month dedicated to the utter badassery and amazingness of LGBTQIA+ kids, teens, and adults.

And let’s be clear. LGBTQIA+ people are pretty freaking badass and amazing.

Cake, Slumps and Hauls. Did I mention cake?

So…that was an unexpected hiatus, huh? I did not expect to be in a book slump so early on in the year; it’s really put a dent in my reading. But for now, let's catch up with each other - and in the process, maybe get to know each other better? Like, what's your favourite kind of cake? As you can see, very important questions ahead, so beware ;) 

I finished Dangerous Girls the other week, which I really enjoyed. Fast-paced and thrilling - just the kind of book I need to pull me out. I’ve just started The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, which I’ve heard a lot about over the years. I have a feeling it’s going to get real interesting... I just met Noah Shaw. I also have my eye on Far From You. Have any fast-paced, unputdownable book recs for me? They'd be much appreciated!

When I slump, I slump, so I’ve been watching a lot of tv. Jamie Oliver, True Blood, Chicago Fire. What have you been watching lately?

In case you didn’t know - I love cookbooks. Especially Family Food, Pete Evan’s latest. I've been thinking I might start reviewing them. Is that something you'd be interested in? Are you a fan of cookbooks like I am?

My Dive Into Diversity book for January was The Secret Side of Empty. I’ll have a review up soon, but I really liked it. It was the first book I’d read about an undocumented immigrant and it definitely moved me in ways I didn’t expect it to. I have some catching up to with all the reviews/links left in last months link-up, but it looks impressive from what I’ve seen! We’ll be posting the February linky next Tuesday so watch out for that. Hello 2015: What's Ahead and Challenge Chat

Happy new year! Can you believe it’s 2015? It sounds so - big. It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes us to mentally switch from 2014 to 2015 and stop writing the wrong date. For some reason, I think it's already programmed into my head. Time will tell. I wanted to share some of my blogging goals for the coming year and the challenges in which I plan to take part. And here they are:

4. Continue Debut Delirium:
I started this feature last year and then things got in the way and I didn’t continue with it. I plan to bring it back, bigger and better, and run int throughout the year. Stay tuned!

3. Tweet more about books:
I had fun with the #2015yareads tag last night, where everyone shared upcoming books we’re excited for. I’d like to do this more, especially since we can’t read all the books. Whether it’s one I’m currently reading or a book I’m anticipating (like a Waiting on Wednesday, in tweet form).

2. Continue hosting Twitter chats:
Last (I went to write ‘this year’. Not in 2015 mode just yet!) year I held two Twitter chats: one for the release of Behind the Scenes by Dahlia Adler and most recently, I led the December #15chat that connected bloggers/readers and debuts authors.

And the number 1, most important thing:
To blog for myself. I’ve blogged for four years (woah?) and when you’ve been around for that long, it’s easy to lose track of why you’re here. I’ve been told time and time again: blog for you. But it only finally sunk in when I read this post by Ashley @ Nose Graze. Do - post - read - what you want and never lose sight of who you blog for: YOU.

Last year I didn't participate in any challenges (except Goodreads); this year I plan to participate in quite a few others! 

First off: I’m setting my own DIY/Must-Read-Soon Challenge, which I did last year as well. Books I've been meaning to read, but haven't got to yet. Keeping it to six books to start off with (I’ll see how I’m doing later on):

Ink is Thicker Than Water by Amy Spalding - I loved Spaldings’ debut and then I read Estelle @ Rather Be Reading’s review/interview for Ink. Can’t wait!

Don’t Let Me Go by J.H. Trumble - I should’ve read this many moons ago. I promised in my comment to my friend, who’s review convinced me to pick it up, that I’d read it ASAP. Oh, in 2012? HA.

The 5 Wave by Rick Yancey - I’ve been wanting to read this ever since the Penguin Live event held earlier in the year. Sounds so good!

Fault Line by Christa Desir - So many reasons to read.

Every Breath by Ellie Marney - I need this like air. Too bad I can’t find a copy. *weeps* The hunt continues!

Feeling Sorry for Celia by Jaclyn Moriarty - I’ve heard all the things about this Aussie YA and need to read it like yesterday, especially after Becky Albertalli rec’d it to me.

Debut Author Challenge (DAC) @ That Artsy Reader Girl (formerly held by The Story Siren)
You guys know I’m a huge supporter of debuts, so this should come as no surprise. The challenge is to read "12 or more middle grade, young adult, and new adult debuts this year.” Looking forward to taking part in this again; it's been a while! Fun fact: this was the first ever challenge I signed up to.

LGBT Challenge hosted by Cayce @ Niji Feels
Another thing I love to read and support: LGBT books. Signing up was pretty much a no-brainer, plus it’ll also have some crossover with Dive Into Diversity, so that work’s out well. I’m aiming for level YA DEVOURER: 10+ YA LGBT books.

Australian Women Writers (AWW) Challenge 
"The 2015 Australian Women Writers Challenge was set up to help overcome gender bias in the reviewing of books by Australian women." The challenge: "to read and review books by Australian women throughout the year.” I aiming for Franklin: read 10 – if reviewing, review at least 6. This is perfect since I want to read more OzYA. Can't wait!

*UPDATE: I also couldn't resist the 365 Days of YA Reading Challenge, so I'm also signing up to that! It's hosted by Sarah @ What Sarah Read and Kate @ Literary Kate, inspired by Epic Reads' 365 Days of YA info graphic.  The great thing is, it's a laid-back, custom-made challenge! I'm not sure what I'll be reading yet, but it'll probably be from the 'book a day' (lots I still need to catch up on) or the current 'month' or 'season' section. Long Time, No See

I’ve slowly been resurfacing and showing my face around Twitter, retweeting, wishing book birthdays and such. And, here I am. Again. I swear I didn’t think I was going to be gone this long. That’s always seems to be the case though. I disappear because of life and then forget to come back, even just to tell you that I’m on hiatus and taking some time away. After months went by, I started thinking that maybe it was time to call it quits. But like always, the love of books pulled me back. I have missed you all so much; chatting books and being surrounded by like minded people and conversing with readers, authors, publishers, and of course, the written word.

Awhile ago I mentioned very briefly I wasn’t well and while I was away, I went overseas for medical treatment. Life has been very busy the last few months, heck, this year. Time is flying and I can’t believe there’s a little over two months left of 2014 - scary. As I write this post, I’m not sure what the future holds, but I know that I miss the community and being apart of it, so hopefully I’ll be around for a little while longer. My main focus is taking care of myself and getting better, along with school, but blogging is a passion, a chance for escapism. So while it isn't #1 priority, it is important to me and I miss it when I'm not present, and for now, I'll keep on blogging. 

In the mean time and until next post, I’ll be reminicing with Full House episodes (oh, childhood nostalgia), finally sitting down with that book I started a week ago and satisfying my sweet tooth with a cookie so delicious you wouldn’t believe it’s healthy. So, that’s me. What about you? I hope you are happy, healthy, have been reading good books lately and taking care. ...so, that was an unexpected hiatus.

If you’re wondering where I’ve been, I’ll keep it short and sweet. I’m not well and I haven’t been for a while, hence the disappearance act. If you’ve been following for some time now, you’ll know that I sometimes take unexpected hiatuses – like this one – and it’s usually due to this reason. Plus, it also hasn’t helped the situation that I was approaching an epic book slump before all this.

Over the last month and a half, I haven’t not just been blogging but I haven’t read much either. I’ve basically been vegging on the coach, trying to do school when I can and watching Friday Night Lights (which btw, is amazing. Fully recommend. Also, Tim Riggins.) So, why am I back? Apart from missing you all, I saw Divergent on Friday (apart from a few small things, I loved it.) and it just reminded me how much I loved the book and that I really want to finish the series, and then that led back to blogging, how much I’ve missed it, this community and BOOKS. Yes, my brain is a whirlwind.

This isn’t a promise or guarantee I’ll be back for good or always consistent. But it is a promise that I’m going to be present when I’m up to it and most importantly, I’m going to get back into reading. Slump, no more! (Hopefully)

For now, I’m off to start a book. Hopefully it’s amazing and loves me back and we get along like a house on fire. If not, watch out because I’ll be coming to y’all (FNL has gone to my head. Texas forever!) for recommendations because one way or another, my head’s going to be buried in a book.

Reading Resolutions 2014 & Happy New Year

Happy New Year and welcome to 2014! A new year, a clean slate; bright with possibilities and fresh starts. Last year (ah! can you believe it?) wasn’t the best year, reading and blogging wise. I can safely say it’s the least I’ve ever read which had a lot to do with slumps so I’m hoping this year will be much better. The start of a new year sees goals and resolutions being set and while I failed last year on all bookish related fronts, it’s still something I like to do because lists! organisation! the chance to actually, possibly, maybe reach your goals and do all those things you’ve been meaning to do! So that’s what I plan to do – here are 10 bookish/reading goals I hope to accomplish this year:

Goals:

1. Read some non-YA – I love YA and I don’t plan on changing that but I do want to broaden my horizons a little. Maybe read an Adult? Send your recommendations my way!
2. Fall in love with a classic – People go on and on about classics and I’d love to find one I LOVE; that makes me see why it’s stood the test of time and is so beloved.

3. A.S. King – This author is like contemporary royalty and no wonder, she’s a King, (pun! starting the year off write! see what I did there? ;) or so I’ve heard and if you know me, you know contemporary is my favourite.
4. Maggie Stiefvater – I read this beautiful, personal post Maggie wrote a few months ago and ever since then I’ve wanted to read one of her books. I’ve heard lots about her books and now I’d like to read one! Where should I start?
5. Courtney Summers -  How have I gone without ever reading a book by yet another contemp favourite? Slack.
6. E. Lockhart – I did read The Boyfriend but that was many years ago. I’d really love to read some of her previous works before the (already) very hyped about, We Were Liars, releases later this year!

8. Where She Went by Gayle Forman – I wasn’t a fan of If I Stay but apparently I just have to read this one. I’ve been told it’s better than the first.

10. Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt – I’ve heard amazing things about this one, especially from Wendy @ The Midnight Garden.

1. Best Book You Read In 2013? (If you have to cheat — you can break it down by genre if you want or 2013 release vs. backlist)
That’s easy - hands down, Friday Brown by Vikki Wakefield. I haven’t reviewed this one because I don’t think I can coherently do it justice but maybe one day. AMAZING.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?
Everbound by Brodi Ashton – I loved Everneath and had high for the sequel but if you’ve read my review, you’ll know I wasn’t a fan.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2013?
Just One Day by Gayle Forman – Last year I read If I Stay and wasn’t a fan but I decided to try Forman’s new series and I LOVED IT. I rated it 5 stars.

4. Book you read in 2013 that you recommended to people most in 2013?
Considering how much I loved it, probably Friday Brown.

5. Best series you discovered in 2013?
Pivot Point by Kasie West – Need. Sequel. Now.

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2013?
Vikki Wakefield – After Friday Brown, I will happily read whatever she writes and I’m anxiously anticipating her future books.

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?
Matilda by Roald Dahl (the audiobook) – I’ve never had success with audiobooks until April reviewed and bought this recent audiobook edition with Kate Winslet reading, to my attention. I wholeheartedly recommend; this would make a great gift for children (and even the parents. My mum loved it).

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2013?
Pivot Point by Kasie West – I couldn’t bear to part with it so I walked around the house with it, trying not to bump into things. I mostly succeeded.

9. Book You Read In 2013 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?
Friday Brown by Vikki Wakefield – Did I mention I loved this? LOVE. (I must be crazy though as this book tore my heart to shreds.)

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2013?

11. Most memorable character in 2013?
Alaska Young from Looking for Alaska by John Green

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2013?
The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson – Beautiful and a new favourite. I’m SO excited for Jandy’s upcoming book in 2014.

Friday Brown by Vikki Wakefield – This book hurt my soul and my heart. I love it even more so because of it.

Again: The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson – Beautiful, achy goodness. I must try and review this if I can!

Shortest - The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, F. Scott (171 pgs)
Longest – Boundless by Cynthia Hand (448 pgs) OR The Diviners by Libba Bray, if I manage to finish it

17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!
A certain scene from Boundless by Cynthia Hand was definitely a WTF moment for me. I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read it but I don’t think I’ve forgiven the author for it yet and I haven’t reviewed it because it made me too angry. (pg 403-412)

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2013 (be it romantic, friendship, etc).
The friendship between Friday and Silence in Friday Brown.

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2013 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

Spy Society by Robin Benway – Why so fun? Spies! This was adorable and I read it in less than 24 hours because it was so entertaining.

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2013?
I went through a lot of tissues with books this year but Boundless (Unearthly, #3) by Cynthia Hand (the WTF moment I featured above) made me ugly cry.

27. Book You Read in 2013 That You Think Got Overlooked This Year Or When It Came Out?
Confessions of an Almost-Girlfriend (Confessions #2) by Louise Rozett – I think this series in general is overlooked. It’s cute, realistic, relatable, fun, entertaining.

Book Blogging/Reading Life 2013

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2013?
I know I followed new blogs this year but I can’t think of a favourite. I'll let you know if I remember.

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2013?
Probably my review of Just One Day.

3. Best discussion you had on your blog?
I really loved writing the Banned Books Week post, offering my teen perspective.

4. Most thought-provoking review or discussion you read on somebody else’s blog?
This post about How to Convert a YA Doubter into a YA Believer – awesome stuff, especially to those who have friends who hate on YA.

5. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?
The Perth Writers Festival was great. I heard Vikki Wakefield speak (author of Friday Brown, the book I can't stop mentioning in this post) and then met her as she signed my book and multiple copies. I was lost for words, managed to choke out "Friday Brown is one of the best books I've read all year" (which is stupid for two reasons because I'd only read like 3 other books so far and it's not just a favorite of the year but of ALL TIME). I'm so awkward.

6. Best moment of book blogging/your book life in 2013?
Can I say being mentioned in the Spirit by Brigid Kemmerer acknowledgments? I’ve never been blurbed (which is a dream for book bloggers) but this is just (if not more) as good. It makes me feel honored to be mentioned in such an awesome book!

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?
Apparently my Just One Day review got the most love! Who knew?

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?
The Banned Books Week post I mentioned above as I put a lot of love into it. I’d love if you checked it out and gave me your thoughts on the matter!

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?
I can't say I discovered something new and bookish...

10.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?
I failed. It was epic and not of the good kind. As I always say, there’s always next year.

Looking Ahead

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2013 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2014?
No idea. I WANT TO READ ALL THE BOOKS.

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2014 (non-debut)?
Isla by Stephanie Perkins and Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson – these are just two of the many books I’m anticipating and I’ll stop thinking or I won’t be able to stop.

3. 2014 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?
I want to read them all because they sound FANTASTIC. Pointe by Brandy Colbert is one of many on my wishlist.

4. Series Ending You Are Most Anticipating in 2014?
Most series have lost or disappointed me and no longer interest me but The Elemental series is still going strong so yay! That’s another reason why I love these books – Brigid never fails to write an entertaining instalment and seems to better with each book in some way. I’m both anticipating and sad to see this series ending.

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2014?
Read more (blogging so easily gets in the way of reading time) and continue to discover more amazing books that remind me of why I read. I love those kind of books.

Goal: To Annoy You At Least Once A Week + Hello Again

Hello there!

As you might have noticed, I took an unexpected hiatus. Unexpected because even though I knew I would be away for a month while in the UK holidaying (it was brilliant, by the way!), I hadn't expected I’d be gone this long. Hence the unexpected part. But here I am again and ready to blog away.

My goal isn't so much to be annoying (I hope I’m not) but rather to be present (but hey, it made you look right?) at least once a week. Let’s hope I stick to it!

Have I mentioned how much I’m looking forward to chatting books and annoying (ha!) you again? I so am! The number one thing about blogging that I've missed is you guys; the community that I’m so thankful to be apart of, so thanks for sticking around and happy reading!

P.S – I've got some reviews scheduled and coming your way in the near future but tell me, what else do you want to see on Reading Wishes; tell me your wishes and I will make them happen (or at least give it a whirl). Debut-a-Thon and Updates

I took part in my first ever read-a-thon last month (bring on the next Bout of Books, I say!) and had a blast so when I heard about the Debut-a-Thon hosted by Books of Amber, I couldn’t help but get excited. In case you’re wondering, it’s a read-a-thon COMPLETELY dedicated to 2013 debuts, hence the name. I’m a huge supporter of debut authors and their books and since I’m signed up to the Debut Author Challenge hosted by Hobbitsies, I’m really looking forward to joining in and getting around to some debuts I’ve been meaning to read.

I’m not sure about what I plan on reading yet but I’d like to aim to read 3 books; any more than that would be a bonus. If you’re interested in what I’m going to be reading, tell me so and I’ll do my best to keep you updated whether it be Twitter, Goodreads and if I’m not too busy reading, right here too.

Back to Blogging

As you can see, I haven’t blogged in a while and for that I apologise. Things have been busy with school, flying to Sydney for the Harlequin Summit that was held (which in case you were wondering, was FABULOUS) then returning home with vertigo (not so fabulous…) and more. Also, I’ve been in a bit of reading rut and when you have a book blog where you’re supposed to come and review what you’ve been reading lately, well…reading ruts are like a book blogger’s kryptonite and as you can imagine, that is not a good combo. Hopefully I’ll soon start to get back into the swings of things and just try to do my best to post regularly. I’ve missed blogging and I’ve missed you guys especially and if you’re still following, thanks for sticking around!

Merry Christmas and See You In 2013

Dear lovely readers,

I just wanted to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This is my last post of the year and me signing off until we meet again in 2013. See you again in January and before you go, here are a few verses of a remixed, Buffy version of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas which I stumbled upon and hope you enjoy! But could only make green flames and sickening smells,

With some hapless human the demons were playing,

I’m baaaaack!

Hello, hello, hello!

After my month long hiatus I am glad to finally be back! I’ve feeling much better about reading and am excited to write reviews again so like I thought, this break is just what the doctor ordered. I probably would have been back sooner but for the last few weeks Goodreads hasn’t been letting me log IN and is still not working and for a blogger and reader, to not be able to use it is rather painful. It looks like I’ll have to get a new account which is rather frustrating but since there looks like no other way, oh well.

With less than two months left before the year is over, I hope to go out on a bang. So be on the lookout for not only reviews (which I’ve got plenty of to post) but a giveaway, survey and maybe an interview, plus a few other fun round-up posts.

On Hiatus

 

As you’ve probably noticed, I haven’t been around much lately, hardly at all. It’s not because I don’t have the time or anything like that, it’s because for me, blogging has lost its fun and has slowly become a chore.

I’m not reading or blogging for me anymore. It’s become about churning out reviews and making sure I have something to post regularly and keeping up with my reading challenge. All important things take into consideration but not the reason I started blogging which was so I could share my passion for reading and books which I’m sad to say is diminishing.

At the moment I don’t have any motivation to blog. I want to be blogging next year; I want to continue reviewing; I want to get excited over comments again. I certainly don’t want to stop blogging but I need some time away to fall in love with reading again, without the hassle and stress of blogging at the back of my mind so that is why I am going on hiatus. This isn’t an easy post to write but I know it’s the right thing to do.

I want blogging to be exciting again. I want my reading mojo back. That is why I’m taking this blogging break. I’m not sure how long I’ll be out of action for but I’m thinking a couple of weeks and then I’ll reassess.

Exciting Book News: Embrace Series To Become A TV Series

Since my mum isn’t interested enough and doesn’t seem to be jumping up and down, I thought I’d come to my sort of people (aka: mad, obsessive, dedicated, loving readers) who aren’t afraid to lose their cool and let their excitement show.

The CW to Develop New TV Series Based on Embrace by Jessica Shirvington

Now, I haven’t yet started the series (I know, bad Becca!) but this is just so exciting! I’ve got a copy of Embrace sitting on my shelf and I’m really looking forward to reading it, especially after hearing this amazing news. I’ve heard great things about this series, I love angel books (Unearthly, Hush, Hush) and Jessica Shirvington is Australian – all exciting points! If you already knew about this, that's awesome but since I only heard about it today, I just had to share and sqee just a little.

Read Along: It's time to get Potterfied!

I started reading the Harry Potter series earlier this year and so far I’ve read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I’d love to finish the rest of the books by the end of the year so that is why I have joined in the Harry Potter Read Along hosted by Lost Generation Reader!

Since I just read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for the first time in April I won’t be rereading it but I WILL be continuing the series and reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Wow, talk about a gorgeous cover overload! Nobody But Us is a road trip so of course I’m sold! Cover wise, it’s not the most fascinating cover but I must say I love the electrifying, bright, bold blue text! After reading Everneath earlier this year and falling in love with it I can’t wait for Everbound! The people who design the covers for the Everneath series deserve an award because not only did they create a gorgeous cover first time round but they’ve succeeded yet again! Isn’t it pretty! :D The cover for Mind Games is certainly intriguing. Plus, I love the colour use!

I’m SUPER eager for all of these titles (and covers), they look so amazing! What about you? What’s your opinion on these covers? Feel free to share :)
