Top Ten: If I Were Teacher for the Day...

No comments:
Top Ten Tuesday is held by The Broke and the Bookish and involves lists and books, two of my favourites.

I love todays topic so much and had such fun putting together a list of books that would be on the syllabus if I taught High School English. Not enough teens enjoy reading and I remember the majority (I’m guessing 95% or more) of classmates read the cliff notes of books we were assigned because they found the book boring and dull. Well, that would not be a problem in my classroom! I would be that awesome teacher who taught books that students could relate to in voice and character. Who would celebrate and welcome discussions and questions. Who would make a point of including diverse voices and character because everyone deserves to heard and seen. And in this moment, I kind of feel like making this all into a reality… On to my list!
1. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta *
This book is my favourite so of course I’d want to push it on my students. Brilliant book, that is all!

2. Friday Brown by Vikki Wakefield *
*see answer to #1

3. The Last Leaves Falling by Sarah Benwell *
This book is incredible, moving and I could see such this inspiring a beautiful, open discussion in the classroom. It doesn’t shy from tough topics and I think teenagers would appreciate that. Also, I would hope it made students appreciate their lives, their health and how lucky they are.

4. Risk by Fluer Ferris
I would push this book into the hand of students as early as possible because I think this book could save lives. Hopefully it would scare the pants off them and be a wake up call to how dangerous the internet can be.

5. None of the Above by I.W. Gregorio
Such an important, eye-opening book that I hope would create a safe, positive environment to talk and learn about intersex.

6. My Life After Now by Jessica Verdi
HIV and AIDS are not talked about nearly enough and that is why this book is so great.

7. Fault Line by Christa Desir
I think this is a very well done book that tackles rape; it’s messy and heartbreaking and unflinching. I think this would also lead to a wonderful discussion about rape culture.

8. Raw Blue by Kirsty Eagar
A fantastic book and * see reasons for #7

9. Every Day by David Levithan
Fantastic book that addresses gender identity, sexuality and so much more.

10. Something Like Normal by Trish Doller
With an incredible realistic male POV and an unflinching look at PTSD, I’d love for this book to be read in school.

*aplogies to my imaginary students for making them cry. Because boy, did these books make me bawl...

Do you agree with any of my choices? Let me know which books would YOU put on the class reading list and why. Oh, and what books did you have to read for school? Any that surprised you and ended up loving? Hopefully none put you off reading! Required reading has been known to do that...

2015 Debuts I Need In My Life, Stat!

20 comments:
Top Ten Tuesday is held by The Broke and the Bookish and involves lists and books, two of my favourites. Today's topic is one I'm super excited to talk about - 2015 debuts I'm anticipating!

I love debuts - reading, supporting and chatting about them. Hence my feature I created last year, Debut Delirium, which I hope to get up and running again very soon! For todays TTT, I’m here to chat about some of my most anticipated debs. There’s quite a few, so of course, this isn’t all of them. If I wrote that post, we'd be here all year. One thing I’m very pleased about, is that a good amount of these are diverse titles. Can’t wait!

*D = diverse title.
First up, Aussie debuts:

The Flywheel by Erin Gough (D)
Aussie YA and a non-issue LGBT? Sold x infinity.

Pieces of Sky by Trinity Doyle
Over the years, I’ve chatted with Trinity on Twitter and become Goodreads friends. I always love hearing about the books she’s reading or loved, so you bet I can’t wait that I finally get to read her book. Contemporary OzYA = my heart.

You’re the Kind of Girl I Write Songs About by Daniel Herborn
This sounds like a lovely contemporary. Plus, there’s a music aspect! Oh, and the cover is so dreamy. *eyes the pretty*

Risk by Fleur Ferris
This has such a creepy, hooking, can’t-stop-reading vibe to it and it sounds amazing! This isn’t up on Goodreads yet, but I’ll be keeping my eye out for it. In the meantime, get excited and read all about it here. (If you’d like to add it when it goes up on GR, leave me your Twitter handle @ and I’ll try to let you guys know about it.)

(While you're here, go check out this fab list on 2015 OzYA releases. So many to anticipate!)

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera (D)
I love the sound of this; such a unique, interesting premise.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli (D)
Everyone needs more adorable, sweet love stories in their life, especially gay, Oreo ones.

Mosquitoland by David Arnold
I feel so in the dark about this one! I find the blurb to be a complete mystery, the reviews are glowing and I just need to know what happens ASAP, OK? OK.

I’ve yet to read a character who’s intersex and I’m so glad that changes this year. (Would you believe I went to type intersex and it underlined it red? You bet I made my computer learn the word.)

Written In the Stars by Aisha Saeed (D)
I’ve never read a book about an arranged marriage before, so I’m glad that’s going to change in 2015. I love reading about things not yet brushed upon in YA. More of this, please!

Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee (D)
I’m not the biggest historical fan. In fact, it kind of scares me. But I heard this is fast/well-paced, plus diversity! cowboys! swoon!

Denton Little’s Deathgate by Lance Rubin
A humorous book on death? Sounds interesting. I always love it when books make me laugh out loud and I’m hoping this book does just that!

And one I've already read and have made it my mission of 2015 to get you all to read it:

The Last Leaves Falling by Sarah Benwell (D)
This book, you guys. I’ve had the pleasure and misfortune (the latter because it broke my heart. But in the words of JG, "It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you.” Yes, indeed.) of reading this already and all I can say is: read it (and weep). It’s incredible, moving, heartbreaking and a must-read. RTC later this month.

The upcoming 2015 debuts look fabulous and I'm sad I couldn't mention them all! Hopefully I'll do another post and highlight more later on in the year, but if not, I'll be sure to Tweet about them!

Top Ten Books I'm Anticipating In 2015

11 comments:
Top Ten Tuesday is held by The Broke and the Bookish and involves lists and books, two of my favourites. Today's topic is one I'm super excited to talk about - 2015 books I'm anticipating. To be able to write this post, I decided not to focus too much on the upcoming debuts because otherwise I would have struggled even more than I did. Plus, debuts will be getting their very own post in early January. So stayed tuned for that as well! Now - let's chat books:
The Devil You Know by Trish Doller - I’m such a big fan of this author and I’m always anticipating her next book. This looks creepy (good)!

Dahlia Adler books - Under the Lights - I really enjoyed Behind the Scenes and I have a feeling I’ll like this even more than that one. It’s LGBT, plus have you seen that gorgeous, diverse cover? My Name is Everett - This is Dahlia’s book of her heart and for that reason alone, I want to read it. So far all I know is that it's set at a boarding school? Colour me intrigued.

The Revenge Playbook by Rachael Allen - I loved 17 First Kisses and it was definitely one of my favourites of the year. So excited to see what story the author has up her sleeve for this book. And a blurb would be nice, too. Yes. I’m excited for a book I know nothing about. That’s how much I enjoyed the authors debut.

Sophomore Year Is Greek To Me - I’m not one who usually gravitates to younger YA/Middle-grade, but I read Freshman Year & Other Unnatural Disasters in 2012 and was a fan. I’m hoping this is just as fun!

Unbreakable by Robin Talley - Robin's debut was a thoughtful, important book that I enjoyed. I'm not the biggest historical fan, so I'm so excited she's a doing contemporary and again, it's an LGBT. Yay diversity!

What You Left Behind by Jessica Verdi - Loved her sophomore novel, The Summer I Wasn't Me and can't wait to back track and read her debut. Sounds great! Plus, male POV.

P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han - I loved To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and was so sad when I reached the end of it. I can’t wait for this one! Love Jenny Han.

Sonny by Kody Keplinger - I’d been hanging out for a new Kody Keplinger YA this year, but it never came. So yay! 2015!

The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord - I was a huge fan of Open Road Summer, so I can’t wait for this one. The story sounds amazing.

Top Ten Tuesday: Popular Authors I've Never Read

5 comments:
I'm in a reading rut so I've been a bit quiet the last week (I only popped up on Twitter because of The Oscars), currently having a break from reading and blogging, but when I realised what the TTT topic was for today, I had to join in! Hopefully I'll be back into the swing of it soon :)

Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, Top Ten Tuesday involves two of my favorites - list making and talking books - with a new topic featured each week. (I haven't done one of these in AGES. I don't plan to take part all the time but I will be joining in from time to time when a subject tickles my fancy.)
9 Popular Authors I've Never Read

I finally picked up a book by Markus Zusak and Courtney Summers, two authors that before this year I had never read. Progress! But the list is long and always growing and there are still plenty of authors who receive lots of praise, that I’ve yet to read. Here are 9 (I’m a bit of a rebel like that;) who I've yet to pick up:

Laurie Halse Anderson
Such a beloved author in YA and I’ve never read any of her books. How?

Laini Taylor
Daughter of Smoke & Bone currently resides on my shelf. Hopefully soon?

Rainbow Rowell
I call myself a contemporary fan and yet I haven’t read, nor own, any of her books.

Neil Gaiman
I loved his speech ‘Make Good Art’ (Haven't watched it? Get onto it! It's inspiring and it will brighten your day), my friend adores him and I’ve only ever heard the best things about his books. What’s stopping me?

Sara Zarr
I once borrowed How to Save a Life from the library…and I never got round to it. Oops.

A.S. King

John Marsden
A very popular author, especially in Australia, I’ve heard great things about his books yet I’ve yet to read one. And I have the whole Tomorrow series on my shelf.

Maggie Stiefvater

Andrew Smith
Ever since Winger released, I’ve been intrigued.

Which authors do we have in common and who do I need to bump up on my TBR?

Top Ten 2014 Debuts I'm Excited For

I love debuts, hence why I’m hosting Debut Delirium, a feature to spotlight new authors and their books throughout the year. In fact, the first official debut post goes live TOMORROW, so be sure to come back then! It’s going to be FUN. On to my debut wish list – trust me, this was no easy feat and these are in no particular order:

Pointe by Brandy Colbert
I think this one sounds INCREDIBLE. I might have bounced around in my chair when I first read the blurb. And that cover!
Expected: April

Summer on the Short Bus by Bethany Crandell
This book sounds like a great balance between fun and heartwarming. Plus, a Zac Efron lookalike? A huh.
Expected: April

Not in the Script by Amy Finnegan
Have you read the blurb? If so, you’ll agree that it sounds like a lot of fun. Release date, why are you so far away?
Expected: September

Words and Their Meanings by Kate Bassett
So, so excited! This sound like it could possibly become a favourite and I don’t say that often.
Expected: 2014

Falling into Place by Amy Zhang
IMAGINATIVE - I read the blurb and that is the vibe I get. Who wouldn’t be looking forward to reading a book “told from the perspective of her neglected childhood imaginary friend”?
Expected: September

No Place to Fall by Jaye Robin Brown
I have one word: GIMME *grabby hands*
Expected: December

Beware the Wild by Natalie C. Parker
I have heard such good things about this debut and the year has only just begun. Colour me intrigued!
Expected: 2014

Otherbound by Corinne Duyvis
I’m a contemporary girl and I hardly read fantasy but THIS – oh my.
Expected: June

Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley
A Historical LGBT, plus it sounds really good.
Expected: October

Behind the Scenes by Dahlia Adler
This sounds so fun and like a blast to read!
Expected: June

Phew! Which debut's are you most anticipating? Spill!

I love book covers – especially ones that are cute, fun, captivating and nice to look at! Yes, books need to get my attention, but after I’ve picked it up, the blurb has to sell me. If it doesn’t well then I put it down and move on. I don't just buy a book cause of the covers. Also, not so much a title fanatic – but there are some good ones out there! To find out some of the book’s I’ve brought that caught my attention (either cover or title) and held my interest after reading the summary, read on to find my list of top ten!
Top Ten Five Books That Whose Titles Or Covers Made Me Buy It
1.      Sometimes It Happens by Lauren Barnholdt – Gorgeous Cover!
2.      Black Painted Fingernails by Steven Herrick – Intriguing title, don’t you agree?!
3.      Taken By Storm by Angela Morrison (Hardcover) – Ended up buying the paperback, so not the one I fell in love with. :( But lucky because this is a book that I don’t plan on keeping...
4.      Saving June by Hannah Harrington – After RAVING review, I went and brought myself a copy. After picking it up, and heading to pay. I spotter the cover. Damn, is it pretty!!
5.      Ten Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn’t Hvae) by Sarah Mlynnowski – As soon as I saw the author’s name, I ordered it!
Feel free to leave me your Top Ten List. I would love to hear from you!

Top Ten Tuesday - Books I want to re-read

This is my first Top Ten Tuesday, so I hope you enjoy my list!
:D
I’m not a HUGE re-reader but, if I were to do so, I would read a book off this list.

1.      Blue Moon by Julia Green. I read this a couple years back and would love to revisit it, and see if I like it as much as I did when I first discovered it.

2.      Baby Blue by Julia Green. The sequel to Blue Moon. Don’t know if I got to read the whole thing, but I’d like to pick it up  and give it a go.

3.      Fireflies by Jonathan Harlen. I read this recently and adored it. I would definitely read it again...just gotta find me a copy. Suck’s that it’s out of print. :( Awesomely Aussie.

4.      That’s Why I Wrote This Song by Suzanne Gervay. Read this a few years back and it surprised me, in a good way. I think I was expecting a light, fun, upbeat read, which this soo wasn’t. It was powerful and deals with alot of teen issues.

5.      Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. I may have read this recently, but I LOVED IT. Will definitely be going back and reliving this story.

6.      The Best Girl by Emma Harrison. Read this awhile back, but wouldn’t mind re-reading, and seeing if I liked it as much as I did when I read it previously.

7.      Perfect Chemistry by Simmone Elkeles. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Enough said.

8.      Rules of Attraction by Simmone Elkeles. A seriously delicious sequel.

9.      Caribbean Cruising by Rachel Hawthorne. Really wanna see if I like it as much as I did when I read it a couple years back.
10.      The Summer I turned Pretty by Jenny Han. Loved it when I read it, which was ages ago. It was so good. :)
