My (Bookish) Christmas Gifts

1 comment:
Hi!

Hope you all had a good Christmas and got some nice books! I got some great presents, and thought I’d share with you what bookish things I received! Ithought you might like to see what I got, so here’s it is:

*The Hunger Games Boxset by Suzanne Collins - I actually ordered this myself, but my Aunty paid for it and wrapped it and everything . It was such a surprise when I got it on Christmas day, how did she know I wanted it! ;)

*If I Stay by Gayle Forman – My good friend, Antoinette, got me this book. I’ve wanted to read this for ages especially since this book is raved about so much. I’m super glad -  it looks like 2012 will be the year I finally read it! Yay!

*Dymocks Giftcard – I love going into bookstores, browsing and buying books so it looks like that’s what I’ll be doing very shortly! Thanks Mum!

Oh, and not to be mean, but when I check out the book beneath the cover, look what I found. Ain't it pretty!

I didn’t get many books but I got a bit of money, so I’ll be indulging myself with some books I didn’t get, that’s a definite!

Again, I hope you had a jolly Christmas with your family and friends, wherever you live! Feel free to leave some links with what you were lucky enough to receive!

2011 - End Of Year Book Survey

3 comments:
2011 is almost over, so when I saw a heard about The Perpertual Page-Turner and the End Of Year Book Survey they run, I decided to take part as it sounded like fun to recap your blogging adventures for 2011! So here it is, enjoy!

1. Best Book You Read In 2011?
That’s a tough question and I can’t choose just one! But a few of my favourites that I read this year include,

- Saving June by Hannah Harrington

- Hunting Lila by Sarah Alderson

- Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

- Perfect Chemistry book 1&2.

2. Most Disappointing Book/Book You Wish You Loved More Than You Did?

Good Oil by Laura Buzo, And Then Things Fall Apart by Arlaina Tibensky and The Future Of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler.

I was expecting a lot from these and I’m sad to say they fell short for me.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2011?

- A Straight Line To My Heart by Bill Condon – I’d heard some great reviews about it, so I picked it up not expecting much. The blurb does not do this book justice!

- Hunting Lila by Sarah Alderson– I’ve only recently started reading paranormal, but this book is amazing! Don’t even get me started on the swoony romance!

4. Book you recommended to people most in 2011?

- Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins – Once I found out that this book wasn’t cheesy like the cover suggests, I recommened it to a lot of people. I’ll say it again, read it if haven’t already!

5. Best series you discovered in 2011?

- Hush, Hush series  by Becca Fitzpatrick– Mystery, action, romance and swoony Patch, what more could you want!

6. Favourite new authors you discovered in 2011?

- Stephanie Perkins – Lovely prose alert!!

- Sarah Alderson – I fell in love with her debut, Hunting Lila, and can’t wait to read more books by her!!

- Simone Elkeles – Loved Book 1&2 of her Perfect Chemistry series, I can’t wait to read some of her other work.

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – After hearing rave reviews about this book I gave it ago. And I am glad I did! So not what I’d normally read, as I dislike killing and blood, but wow oh, wow! Great choice for your first dystopian book!!

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2011?

- Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick– Read it in less than 24 hours. Lots of swoons, lots of action – I loved it!

- The Secret Year by Jennifer R. Hubbard – This book grabbed me from page and didn’t let me go til the last page. I read this in a couple of hours

9. Book you most anticipated in 2011?

- Ten Things We Did (and probably shouldn’t have) by Sarah Mlynowski – Loved her Rachel In Manhattan series, so when I found out she had a new book, I pre-ordered it and I was not disappointed!

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2011?

11. Most memorable character in 2011?
- Harper from Saving June

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2011?

- Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler – A beautiful, lyrical prose.

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2011?

- Love is the High Law by David Levithan – I didn’t love this book, but it definitely impacted on me.

14. Book you can't believe you waited UNTIL 2011 to finally read?

- Jennifer Echols books Endless Summer and Going Too Far – She’s an awesome contemporary  writer and look forward to reading more by her very soon!

15. Favourite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2011?

“He took his pain and turned it into something beautiful. Into something that people connect to. And that's what good music does. It speaks to you. It changes you.” --- Hannah Harrington, Saving June

“Tomorrow will be better.”
“But what if it’s not?” I asked.

“Then you say it again tomorrow. Because it might be. You never know, right? At some point, tomorrow will be better.”--- Morgan Matson, Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour
“A moment of reserve. "That was it? The whole story?"
"Yes. God, you're right. That was pants."
I sidestep another aggressive couscous vendor. "Pants?"
"Rubbish. Crap. Shite."
Pants. Oh heavens, that's cute.”--- Stephanie Perkins, Anna and the French Kiss
16. Book That You Read In 2011 That Would Be Most Likely To Reread In 2012?
- Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

- Saving June by Hannah Harrington

- Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles
17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!
Pretty much all moments featuring Harper and Jake from Saving June.

Review: Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick

Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick (Hush, Hush Series - Book #3)

October 1st, 2011 ∙ Simon & Schuster

Source: Purchased

Format: Paperback

Page Count: 448

The noise between Patch and Nora is gone. They've overcome the secrets riddled in Patch's dark past...bridged two irreconcilable worlds...faced heart-wrenching tests of betrayal, loyalty and trust...and all for a love that will transcend the boundary between heaven and earth. Armed with nothing but their absolute faith in one another, Patch and Nora enter a desperate fight to stop a villain who holds the power to shatter everything they've worked for—and their love—forever.

Review:

After reading Crescendo’s crazy cliff hanger I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book! Luckily, mum let me have it from under the Christmas tree early, except of course we had to find it first, and that’s not an easy task as a lot of the presents look alike! But, I did find it eventually, so read on to find out what I thought of Silence!
Like the previous two books, Silence is very captivating, suspenseful and will leave you wondering what’s around the corner! But it is indeed very different. At the start I wasn’t loving it as much as I thought I would because you feel a bit lost, with everything that’s happening with Nora and the such, I felt frazzled. But that didn’t last too long. Soon it was making more sense and things were becoming much clearer and bam, your back into the swing of it!
Yes, for me Silence was different but it ended up being a good different. Your probably thinking how could it change much from the previous two books, from Patch and Nora being on again, off again and crazy angel debacles, but it did. I’m trying to put my finger on it, what made it different, and there are a number of reasons, but one that really sticks out like a chord is how the story has developed and the characters have grown.
I haven’t really focused on Becca’s writing in the two previous book reviews (whoops!) because of all the other stuff that was happening, but here it goes. When I was reading this book, I found myself pausing the story and just focusing on the authors prose and wow, I simply love it. You probably don’t really take notice of her writing as your so absorbed in what’s going on, so next time take a minute and enjoy her easy reading, fun prose.
In Crescendo I found Nora to be a bit whiny and annoying, thankfully this time round she didn’t bother me. I wish Vee had of been in it more, but I hope and have a feeling she’s going to be in the next book more, so let’s wait and see! And need I go on, you know I love him but I’ll say it again, Patch you swoony guy you!
With Silence’s ending, I cannot wait for the last book to find out what’s going to happen and see how they end this thing!

Getting To Know You: Busy Book Bee

No comments:
Welcome to this week Getting To Know You, here we have with us today:

Megan from Busy Book Bee!

How long have you been blogging?
Well, I'm a newbie. I started in September of this year.

Why did you decide to create a blog?
I myself have always gone to book blogs to see what's new. To read reviews on books I'm considering reading. Because of that I figured "hey why not make my own blog?". Where I can freely state how I feel about books I've read and also meet people who enjoying reading as much as I do.

How did your blog name originate?
Busybookbee. It basically means that even though life today is hectic, and it leaves little for "me" time. I strive to dedicate time within my day to pick up a book and read.

How did you get into reading? Have you always been a reader?
I only ever read for school. Sadly. Reading books purely just to enjoy reading in itself never occurred to me. It was...boring? Yeah, it was boring. But, that's when I was younger than I am now. Obviously my feelings on that has changed. And, I'm glad it did. Books really are something to enjoy and treasure.

What was the last book you read, that made you feel like shouting from the rooftops, ‘cause it was that good!
Mmmm...oh wow let's see. I would have to say it is the currently ongoing UNF/PA series Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews. I can read all the recent books over and over again and never get tired of it. It makes me laugh, and I'm so in love with the characters. Definitely can't wait for the next book.

Bookish and Random...

Fave Literal Book Crush...
Whaaaat? Do you realize how hard a question this is? There's sooo many but I will choose my most recent book crush. And, it's Cricket Bell from Lola and the Boy Next Door.

Favourite TV Show(s)...
Once again. A hard question. I'll name two. Psych and Doctor Who. That's right, I'm a Whovian and proud of it!
Favourite authors...
Ooh. Ally Carter, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Stephanie Perkins, Lauren Oliver, Rick Riordan, etc. Just to name a few.

Hardback or Ebook?
Both. I absolutely love my NOOKcolor. I take it everywhere with me. And ebook/tablet is very handy, esp when I don't want to lug a huge hardback with me while I'm on the train going to school. No. I can instead pull out my NOOK and read.
Now, for the hardback. It's satisfying having the feel of it on your hands, touch of the paper as you turn the pages. I can't choose between both, because each is perfect. For me, at least.

Quote that you live by (or simply like)...
"Never to dwell. Learn to let go when you need to. And, always move forward."

When you’re not reading, what do you like to do? Listen to music, watch TV, hang with friends. Or my favorite pastime...sleep. XD

Thanks for joining us today Megan, I hope you enjoyed taking part!

Getting To Know You: Flipping Through The Pages

No comments:
Welcome to this week’s Getting To Know You interview, please welcome:

How long have you been blogging?
I started blogging in July on WordPress, but then decided to move to Blogger in September (which is why there are SO many blogposts in my September archive!)
Why did you decide to create a blog?
I started out in July as part of a university assignment, we had to create a “web presence”, and this included having a blog – and because I love reading, it seemed the obvious topic! – After the assignment was over, I decided I really loved blogging and the blogging community so I decided to move to Blogger!
How did your blog name originate?
Well, originally my blog name was “The Book Babbler” when it was on WordPress because I tend to babble nonsensically about everything! After I moved to Blogger, I wanted to change the name because I didn’t like it, so I came up with my current one because I tend to constantly flip backwards to check something in a book and I’ve even made it look like the page is flipping on my e-reader! Plus, there is the added bonus of no one having that name :)
How did you get into reading? Have you always been a reader?
I was an avid reader growing up, I loved Harry Potter, Roald Dahl, Alice in Wonderland, non-fiction animal and ocean books and Bambi – they were probably my favourites! Once I entered highschool and was forced to read books that I simply didn’t enjoy, I only read the odd book here and there (plus, I didn’t have enough time from year 10-12). After school finished, I finally picked up books that I wanted to read and have been addicted again ever since :)
What was the last book you read that made you feel like shouting from the rooftops because it was that good?
Well, I’d say Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, but my latest is actually Shatter Me by Tareheh Mafi (which I got two weeks early in Aus, YAY!) because it was fabulous writing and it was just overall amazing!
Fave Literal Book Crush
Oh :( I can’t pick just one! Tucker from Unearthly or Adam from Shatter Me! They are both guys who are actually sweet, caring and not abusive :) *swoon*
Favourite TV Show(s)
Family Guy, Flight of the Conchords, Sex and the City, Sailor Moon and Cake Boss is getting up there with my faves!
Favorite Authors
JK Rowling <3, Stephen King, Christopher Pike, Kiersten White, Laini Taylor and many, many, many more!!
Hardback or Ebook
Both :) I love e-books because I can carry HEAPS of books around with me and those books don’t get ruined in my handbag on the way to uni! But, I always get books I love on hardback, I love the smell of books and staring at the pretty covers and the feel of the pages! But I definitely understand why so many people like e-readers, they are convenient!
Quote that you live by (or simply like)
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it” – To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee.
“You can never hate strongly, unless you have loved strongly” – The Last Vampire, Christopher Pike
When your not reading, what do you like to do?
I like going out/hanging out with friends, watching movies, dancing (like a spastic), watching the theatre, shopping and going out for lunch/dinner with friends and chilling with family :)
Thanks for having me Rebecca :)
No worries Taneika, thanks for taking part!

Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick

No comments:
Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick (Hush, Hush Series - Book #2)

October 19th, 2010 ∙ Simon & Schuster

Source: Brought
Nora Grey's life is still far from perfect. Surviving an attempt on her life wasn't pleasant, but at least she got a guardian angel out of it: a mysterious, magnetic, gorgeous guardian angel. But, despite his role in her life, Patch has been acting anything but angelic. He's more elusive than ever and even worse, he's started spending time with Nora's arch-enemy, Marcie Millar.

Nora would have hardly noticed Scott Parnell, an old family friend who has moved back to town, if Patch hadnt been acting so distant. Even with Scott's totally infuriating attitude Nora finds herself drawn to him - despite her lingering feeling that he's hiding something.

Haunted by images of her murdered father, and questioning whether her nephilim bloodline has anything to do with his death, Nora puts herself increasingly in dangerous situations as she desperately searches for answers. But maybe some things are better left buried, because the truth could destroy everything - and everyone - she trusts
.
Review:
When I started this book, even though I really wanted to read this, I just wasn’t in the mood to read. But never fear Becca Fitzpatrick is here.
In Crescendo, Vee’s was just as crazy and fun as she was in Hush, Hush, which I loved! I can’t wait to read about more of her and Nora’s antics! Nora was a bit annoying at times, but with the events at hand, I think she is forgiven. As for Patch, well he’s just as swoony as ever!
The end of each chapter is horrible, as it ends grippingly, forcing you to read on, which is not very good when your trying to stop reading and pull it in for the night.
Throughout the novel this book is very suspenseful and will keep you on the edge of your seat, but as I neared the ending the book turned up notches on the action scale.  And just when I thought it was wrapping up, something happens leaving you with a dreaded cliff hanger!
I can’t wait for Silence after reading the ending of book two! I might just have to weasel it out of mum from under the tree as an early Christmas present? Hmm, I hope so!
If you enjoyed Hush, Hush, I don’t think you’ll want to miss all the action that is Crescendo!

The Future of Us by Jay Asher, Carolyn Mackler

The Future of Us by Jay Asher, Carolyn Mackler
November 21st 2011 Razorbill
Source: Won
It's 1996, and Josh and Emma have been neighbors their whole lives. They've been best friends almost as long - at least, up until last November, when Josh did something that changed everything. Things have been weird between them ever since, but when Josh's family gets a free AOL CD in the mail, his mom makes him bring it over so that Emma can install it on her new computer. When they sign on, they're automatically logged onto their Facebook pages. But Facebook hasn't been invented yet. And they're looking at themselves fifteen years in the future.
Review:
When I heard about this novel, I was astounded about the premise, it sounded so different and unique, I knew I had to get my hand on it as soon as possible.
Before reading this novel I had yet to read anything by these two authors except part of a book by Carolyn Mackler. Not really having been immersed in their styles before The future of Us, I can now say that prose wise their writing was reasonably enjoyable and I think they did a good job collaborating.
I was expecting a lot and I mean a whole lot from this book and sometimes it delivered and other times was disappointed as I found it missed the mark.
The characters were okay, but were annoying at times because of the silly decisions they made (yes, Emma I’m talking about you). For me they were just alright.
I wish I hadn’t of set the bar as high as I did because whenever I work up a book, it never seem to reach my expectations. However, I was pleased with the ending and how they wrapped it up.

Getting To Know You: Little Red Reads

2 comments:

Welcome to this week’s Getting To Know You, please welcome:
Stephanie from Little Red Reads!

How long have you been blogging?
Blogging in general a few years (not a whole lot but I’ve had some kind of blog ever since 2004) but my book blog was created on October 4, 2011.

Why did you decide to create a blog?
I was inspired by Jude at In Between Writing and Reading and I said to myself, “Hey, I want to do this!”
How did your blog name originate?
Well I wanted to incorporate red or ginge because of my hair and I wanted it to be literary. So I went to Goodreads and I had people throw me out ideas and the winner would be featured on my blog… Little Red Reads actually came from Rebecca here at Reading Wishes :D Thanks Rebecca! :D

How did you get into reading? Have you always been a reader?
When I could read at 3 years old is how long I have been reading. I just love it so much!

What was the last book you read that made you feel like shouting from the rooftops because it was that good?
The entire Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead. It is one of the best series’ ever. I could reread them over and over again. Also, My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. It was so good and so breathtaking and so tragic. I literally cried like a baby after reading that book.

Fave Literal Book Crush
Oh boy, there are a lot :D But if I had to pick one… Adrian Ivashkov from The Vampire Academy Series and the Bloodlines Series (which I have yet to read).

Favourite TV Show(s)
Haha, you ready for the long list? The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, Glee, Bones, LOST, NCIS, Law&Order:SVU, Criminal Minds, Wizards of Waverly Place (I’m not ashamed to admit that), Pretty Little Liars, Make It Or Break It, Once Upon A Time, Storm Chasers, Unforgettable, I can keep on going too.

Favorite Authors
There’s a lot of these but I will just give you a few :D Richelle Mead, Jane Austen, The Bronte Sisters, C.C. Hunter, Shannon Delany, Jodi Picoult, Megan McCafferty, James Patterson, and more.

Hardback or Ebook
I LOVE having a physical copy but I like reading from my Kindle. So, either, I guess. :D

Quote that you live by (or simply like)
“Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Eleanor Roosevelt. I love this quote and I think it is SO true.

When your not reading, what do you like to do?
WRITE! I want to be a best-selling author one day! It’s my BIGGEST dream.

Hope you guys enjoyed this weeks interview!

Past Perfect by Leila Sales

Past Perfect by Leila Sales

All Chelsea wants to do this summer is hang out with her best friend, hone her talents as an ice cream connoisseur, and finally get over Ezra, the boy who broke her heart. But when Chelsea shows up for her summer job at Essex Historical Colonial Village (yes, really), it turns out Ezra’s working there too. Which makes moving on and forgetting Ezra a lot more complicated…even when Chelsea starts falling for someone new.

Maybe Chelsea should have known better than to think that a historical reenactment village could help her escape her past. But with Ezra all too present, and her new crush seeming all too off limits, all Chelsea knows is that she’s got a lot to figure out about love. Because those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it….
Review:
When I found out about this book I added it to my wishlist straightaway, knowing I had to check it out. This is my first book by Leila Sales and all I can say, is that if her other books are as good as this, I’ll definitely be reading them!

Chelsea was at times a little self-centered but was always a quirky, fun loving, relatable character. All the characters were true to life and acted like real teens with faults and imperfections, which was refreshing to read. Even though Dan was the enemy, he was definite swoon material and wished he could have been in it more!

Sales’s prose was enjoyable as it was easy to connect with and breezy to read.

The Colonial Village setting was great and totally different to what you would normally read about. It was such a unique place to set a story but it worked really well.

Whenever I picked this up to read again I fell into the same pace, like I’d never left it.

Endless smiles - this is such a fun book, that I would totally recommend! I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next.

Love is the Higher Law by David Levithan

Love is the Higher Law by David Levithan
First there is a Before, and then there is an After. . . .

The lives of three teens—Claire, Jasper, and Peter—are altered forever on September 11, 2001. Claire, a high school junior, has to get to her younger brother in his classroom. Jasper, a college sophomore from Brooklyn, wakes to his parents’ frantic calls from Korea, wondering if he’s okay. Peter, a classmate of Claire’s, has to make his way back to school as everything happens around him.

Here are three teens whose intertwining lives are reshaped by this catastrophic event. As each gets to know the other, their moments become wound around each other’s in a way that leads to new understandings, new friendships, and new levels of awareness for the world around them and the people close by.

David Levithan has written a novel of loss and grief, but also one of hope and redemption as his characters slowly learn to move forward in their lives, despite being changed forever.
Review:
This book is small – only 167 pages in length – but the story Levithan has produced about the tragic 9/11 incident will get under your skin and really get you thinking.
When I started this book, the beginning was quite hard to read – tears pricked my eyes, goosebumps formed on my skin – but luckily the actual event and description was only at the very start. The rest of the story follows three teenagers, Claire, Jasper and Peter, during the aftermath of the event and how they come to terms to deal.
The story is told in alternating chapters between the three teens about them coming to terms with their lives After the event and them trying to move forward in their lives.
During the tragic time, even though what was happening was horrific, it was heart-warming to see everybody coming together and helping each other out.
